To date only 1% of my clients are based in the immediate local area. In general my clients are based in and around London, up North in the West Midlands and sometimes work is carried out for customers as far as Australia. My clients are based everywhere; everywhere except locally.
This was not a strategy I planned, just coincidence and it was not a problem for me but when I think about it, maybe it’s actually a missed opportunity.
I’ve managed to gain the trust and win clients hundreds of miles away but there are actually businesses on my doorstep wanting to do the same so I decided to act on this idea and last year I pushed out communication locally.
In doing so I’ve managed to pick up another 2 local clients based on the fact that I was local and could give them business support in Essex.
So why did I miss this opportunity. I personally think it was a reflection of the times. The internet allowed me to publicise myself without geographic borders and in doing so I won clients nationally but missed out locally.
In any case, I’ve acted on the problem and am still attempting to fix it but I’m curious, what are your thoughts?
Do you actually have many local clients? And have you discovered and acted on missed business opportunities?
