The startup phase is one of my favourite phases of doing business. It’s exciting to create the new branding for a business and help a client get started with a new website. All sorts of challenges come along and I’ll be honest, working with the client could be the biggest challenge however being able to build a relationship, figure them out and figure their business ideas out is probably the most rewarding aspect of my job.
Selling the service of design is no easy job. You the designer have to sell the client your skills and expertise which is based purely around you. There is no physical product that the client is buying into and design itself is not comprehensible to everyone.
It’s actually like selling water to a fish.
Size isn’t Everything
Start-ups tend to think that they have to look big in order to be taken seriously. The truth is that you don’t. Most businesses prefer to work with other small businesses as oppose to big name brands.
I started out with the same mind set but found that being honest, being small and being me attracted more customers.
It won’t happen overnight
Some new businesses have ideas of grandeur, thinking that because they have an idea and want to sell it, people will buy into it instantly. Whatever your idea is, it won’t become successful overnight.
Every single business takes time to build. Amazon took 7 years to turn a profit so be prepared for the long haul.
There is actually no form of paperwork or regulation for something to hold or be protected by Copyright.
If you think that your idea holds some weight of originality and needs to be protected then your best bet is to read my article on Copyright, Trademarks and Patents to get a better idea of what
you need and also visit the patent office website.
Occasionally a start-up may ask me to sign a non-disclosure agreement and it does make me smirk. It is commendable if you have one and if you feel you really need one then get one but in all honesty don’t waste a lot of time or money creating one.
The chances of anyone stealing your idea is super slim. Likewise the same goes for images and content. It can be stolen but its extremely
rare and the impact of the theft will be so small, its negligible.
