Looking at numbers is a boring task. Its not supposed to be pretty or entertaining as such, its supposed to be informative and has been since 1644 when Michael Florent van Langren created the first graph.
Charts and graphs do however make data more interesting to look at but also easier to comprehend.
During the initial computer age there was an influx of auto graphs with simple graphics trying to make what was known as boring data into pretty pictures.
As every home and business got a PC, copy of windows and office, these chart creation tools were available to everyone and in essence it became an oversaturated tool for a good ten years.
As the internet grew stronger and new technology was introduced to our lifestyles, our reading and desirable habits changed.
This affect was introduced by “good graphic” design.
We got use to looking at nice charts to retrieve quick data such as Google analytics which utilises great design both visually and functionally.
As time progresses we’ve also got use to seeing much more digitally graphically designed objects with the use of laptops, tablets and now phones to interfaces with the information we want.
As a culture we’ve developed a lifestyle based around speed and good presentation due to time restraints and the mass of info available.
We’ve gone from visualising data in a basic and boring form to a creative and informative arrangement, keeping up with our own human trends.
Data is and always will be important but making the effort to “Visualise data” more creatively may just help you get that sale.
And remember that it was graphic design that did it.
