Heres the story……
You go down to your local supermarket (say Tesco) to buy some bread.
You don’t look at the gigantic logo on top of the store because you know it’s a Tesco. Subliminally, the giant glass windows, sheltered walkway and array of red and blue signify a Tescos.
You walk to the bread aisle and search for your bread, probably the same bread you buy every week.
You don’t pay particular detail to the packaging however you do identify with it!
You pick up the bread in blue wrapping with giant yellow letters
You may look at the core elements being ……thick, white, brown etc and your eyes might be drawn to the “unique” yellow price stickers that highlight a special offer but you pay no real attention to the packaging design.
That bread sits in your house for a few days or maybe a week and you still don’t look at the packaging even though you handle the bread several times.
The reason being is that it’s not a bad design, it’s not unique enough.
New and unique design tends to create a lustful emotion for buyers that demands that you look at it. More often than not it sits elegantly, interestingly and curiously on a shelf to draw you in and make itself an alternative option to your regular purchase. New and unique package design can entice you and once that’s done, the product creates the potential of a new sale.
On the flipside it can be argued that the consistency and familiarity of a package design is what makes us buy it. It’s the relationship that the product or identity design has created that wins the sale but that same old familiarity is not enough to keep a buyer from straying away somewhere else.
Even the biggest, best and most familiar brands need to redesign their packaging or themselves in order to stay current and keep buyers interested. They need to keep changing, innovating and appear different.
Adding a unique touch to any design goes along way and that’s how design can increase your sales….
