I’ve always been a fan of Firefox, not just the browser but the company (Mozilla) and particularly the Firefox Logo Design.
Whilst others created corporate, safe and typically lacklustre logos to represent their browsers, Firefox made a unique stance right from the beginning, and that’s before Firefox was Firefox.
It was Thunderbird.
The first Firefox iteration back in 2004 was not so much a representation of the times but more of the future.
The fired up fox encapsulates and curiously looks over the globe and even by todays standard it was quite daring to use so many gradients and colours in its logo design.
Over the years its changed minimally but noticeably with deeper colours and subtle effects reflecting the changing style of internet design trends.
Today, the latest trend in web design is flat design where the use of gradients have been minimised and substituted for solid blocks of colour.
In doing so it makes a logo redesign for Firefox quite difficult.
Should it stick to its roots and set identity of vibrancy and gradients or go flat like the rest of the world to stay current.
What Firefox did was this:
Without diminishing the use of gradients they opted for softer minimal gradients, losing the glossy feel and creating a flatter, smoother matte finish instead.
As a sign of their ever-growing evolution and market status, the logo has also streamlined a little, removing some of its design details to produce a cleaner looking logo.
It’s a great solution that solved the dilemma.
Neither is it completely flat nor does it loose its original identity design.
In doing so its stays current but without losing it’s heritage.
FireFox is logo that has changed over the years but unlike most companies, Mozilla seem to make every new version of the logo better than the last.
A feat that’s hard but doable in small consistent steps.
Maybe one day we’ll actually see the fox’s face.
