There are lots of articles about how we perceive colour and the psychological effect it has in business but what most of these articles do not consider is the effect of colour in combination with shapes.
This effect comes into play heavily with graphic design and logo design.
Whilst a colour like red can symbolise danger, heat or even the devil, if you combine it with a different shape, it can create a different meaning altogether.
This alternate representation is produced because of the way we learn and understand shapes and colour in combination.
For example, today we think of “Earth” as a blue and green ball but thousands of years ago we thought of it as a blue and green box!
Through learning and understanding, our perception of the Earths shape and colour has changed.
This is a great example of how we perceive shape and colour in combination.
We’re taught and evolving our intellect, as oppose to just visually accepting it.
This works similarly with logo design for business.
Where a colour such as red may represent love or even blood, in combination with a unique style or more specifically a typeface it can create a different meaning altogether, one that works as a unique logo design.
Much like our perception of the Earth, our brain learns to accept a colour and shape in a different light, almost instigating it as a visual, original and recognisable shape with a unique meaning.
When designing a logo for your business that’s a big benefit.
The shape and colour combination is building a psychological relationship with the customer and turning your brand image ito a physcial asset.
This is the purpose of a brand identity design so don’t be scared to go against the norm or break conventions when designing your logo because in doing so the effects of breaking the rules may be far more rewarding then following them.
Rather then resorting to convention and boring your customers, be original and educate them instead.
