This article is not for startups, micro businesses or established businesses, it’s for anyone delving into online marketing for the first time.
We come across many virgins of online marketing who think it’s free or easy.
This misconception is generated by the technology itself:
- Because we all have access to the internet and technology is so great, its conceived as free or easy
- Some of the greater powers that make this technology make it sound free or easy
However, it’s not. If your jumping online to promote your business here’s three things you need to consider.
Budget, Time and Knowledge.
You need to have at least 2 of the above to successfully market online and when I say successful, l mean create an ROI.
Today there are plenty of ways to market your business online from PPC to SEO, social media marketing to content marketing and your first consideration will be to choose one.
The question is what is each one? Which one will be effective for you and how much will it cost because although their perceived as self-doable, easy or even cheap/free, it probably won’t be all of those things for you. Upon realisation you’ll figure out two routes to get started:
- DIY: Requires a big time investment to attain knowledge and put into practice. The chances are that a budget will still be required.
- Hire a Pro: Requires a much bigger cash investment but still needs some time investment.
To get the best, possibly quickest results from online marketing you’ll probably need to hire pro in one discipline or another. This will save you time to get an ROI but don’t think it will be cheap. With online technology, algorithms, keywords and apps changing literally on a day by day basis, it takes a lot of skill to stay ahead and generate an ROI.
To be realistic expect to have a £1000 budget per month to generate an ROI with online marketing if your deciding to give it all to a pro.
The great thing about time is that if you don’t have knowledge or a budget then time can help you build both.
Although time makes it sounds achievable, we’ve seen plenty who stopped DIY marketing because attaining just a small amount of knowledge took so much time. Adwords makes PPC sound easy but once you start, you’ll be bombarded with lingo which makes no sense whatsoever to an online marketing virgin.
This article is not here to sell you online marketing services, neither is it here to tell you its impossible to DIY. If you’re feeling like a fruity virgin and want to give it a go, then dive right in. You never know you may have a knack for it.
This article is here to push some reality into online marketing for virgins because like business itself online marketing is not free, not cheap and certainly not easy but the great thing about the internet is that it does put you in a power position to promote your business like nothing else before.
If you don’t have time, knowledge or a budget then don’t give up. Get at least two of the mentioned instead and move forward with it but realise that you can’t move anywhere online without at least two.
