When I think of African design a whole host of warm hues, imperfect shapes and textures come to mind. I see more of an artistic approach rather then clean cut contemporary graphic design look, however things on the sun soaked continent seem to be changing. As of late I’ve come across many a great graphic designer from Africa producing beautiful and professional pieces of contemporary graphical communication.

As designers we jump on the bandwagon and literally follow suit but if we look beyond the technology we’ll see a history of design styles that have cultural impact worldwide. These styles become more then a trend, they become an identity for a nation.
Design trends go in and out of fashion but during their 15 minutes of fame they define an era. Current design trends are great for pieces with short shelf life’s such as flyers and maybe even websites but is it ideal for longer lasting projects such as identity design?
